Historical Notes

“In 1768 Colonel Ebenezer Gay bought a part of Sharon home lot number 25. On the lot in 1775 he built the salmon-colored brick house that is now known as the Gay-Hoyt house, the home of the Sharon Historical Society by gift of Miss Ann Hoyt. Marckres’s photograph reveals that the rest of the home lot, facing the Town Clock, was once a busy site. It was crowded with shops, including a general store, a lumber yard, a jewelry shop, and a ladies’ millinery establishment. Only the clapboard house (2 Main Street) at the far right remains. The other buildings were moved west of the Congregational Church by George Kirby, the innkeeper, who used them to house his workers.”
