Join Johanna Lindsay on Jan. 12 from 5pm-9pm to toast her new exhibit at PLACE. in Millerton, NY.  Johanna’s photography will be featured through March 12th at Millerton’s unique gallery space that combines art, furnishings, and fashion.

Read our interview with Johanna below for a sneak peek at what’s to come.

Tell me about your photography style?

I capture moments in everyday life that tell a story. I get so much inspiration living in New York City. There are so many stories I see walking the streets. The best moments seem to hit me on the subway, it’s the smallest details that say so much. I think of myself as a writer who writes with a camera.

WhyPLACE. ?
Sonne Hernandez who runs the gallery at Place has an impeccable eye for art. The country-chic decor that Joan Osofsky from Hammertown curates and the eclectic clothing and accessories that Mimi Ramos sources for Camp work incredibly well with my photography. There’s

a great sense of synergy – it all flows so nicely.

What was your career path?

I started my career in Toronto, Canada as the Associate Producer for The Second City. I was always taking pictures of the cast and backstage moments. I carried around my camera in my purse. When I came to New York City to work on Broadway in a Public Relations role, I was surrounded by professional photographers and soaked up whatever I could learn from them. Instagram changed my life when I started the account @fromthewestvillage. I was published in the Chronicle Books’ This Is Happening: #Life through the lens of Instagram. Instagram is a fantastic platform to hone your skills and discover incredible talent.

What camera do you use?

I use a Canon and a Leica, but my iPhone allows me to take sneaky shots, especially riding the subway.

Who are the photographers that have influenced your style?

I’m crazy about Vivian Mailer. She really speaks to me. I appreciate the work of Elliott Erwitt, Robert Capa, Diane Arbus, William Eggleston and the street photographers I follow on Instagram.
