Valentine’s Day

“All you need is love. But a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt.
-Charles M. Shultz

As is true with most modern-day holidays, Valentine’s Day has a long and complex history. It is believed that Valentine’s greetings were exchanged as far back as the Middle Ages. The oldest written Valentine, a poem to his wife composed during his many years as a prisoner of war, is attributed to Charles, Duke of Orleans. While Valentine’s is traditionally a day to celebrate romantic relationships, in the United States it has a more broad reach and extends to friends and family. It is especially popular with children and young adults, who celebrate by exchanging cards, treats and flowers at school.

A popular objection to Valentine’s Day is that it is a “commercial” holiday. We’d like to think this doesn’t have to be true! With the ever-increasing popularity of DIY websites and Pinterest, there are countless ways to create handmade, personalized Valentines. If you have children, creating your own Valentines is a great way to get in some quality family time, and create lasting memories and traditions.

If you’re too busy to create handmade Valentines for everyone on your list, we suggest supporting local merchants!
