Need A Lift?

April 10th, 2018

Forty years ago Robert and Carol Sadlon, then “weekenders” to the local Tri-State region, had a vision for a rundown old Grange Hall in Millerton, NY, so they bought the building, got to work, and on Memorial Day Weekend, 1978, The Moviehouse opened its doors. Since those early days, Millerton has changed drastically. Once thriving in the mid-19th century, by the 1970’s Millerton had become depressed. It was through the vision of the Sadlons and other like-minded local merchants that Millerton steadily grew out of that depression to become the cultured, cultivated town it is today.

At its inception, The Moviehouse was a single-screen theater, bringing “first run” films to an area where movie theaters were few-and-far-between. Since then it has grown into a state-of-the-art, four-screen theatre with the latest digital technology available.  As such, The Moviehouse has become a destination for literally everything from Pixar movie family events to live-streaming performances of the Metropolitan Opera. In their attempt to accommodate this wide range of consumers, the Sadlons have worked diligently to rotate movies and performances between the lower and upper floors of the theatre. This of course presents many challenges, especially as the upper floor theatres are better suited for cultural events like Art Openings, Speaker Programs, Indie Film Showings and the like. In the words of Robert Sadlon, their goal is: “All movies and programs, for all people, at all times.” Hence, “The Elevator Pitch,” which-when you click the link-will explain why, after 40 years, The Moviehouse “needs a lift.”
