Art Abounds

October 12th, 2017

“Art allows us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time.”
-Thomas Merton

With their close proximity to the metropolitan areas of New York City and Boston, the Southern Berkshires, Litchfield County and Hudson Valley have long been regarded as a haven for artists. The bucolic environment provides inspiration to writers, poets, sculptors, crafters, and painters alike.

Driving through the small towns that comprise this Tri-State Region, one could easily be lulled into thinking that they are far removed from the art scenes of the metro areas. This, however, could not be further from the truth!

From galleries, artists’ studios, retreat centers, playhouses, music venues, and even shows in local coffee houses, the region is brimming with art and culture in which one could easily find and lose themselves. Especially on weekends, there are a plethora of offerings to those seeking retreat into the world of art, from gallery openings to writer’s readings. Here are some of our perennial favorites:

This weekend, be sure to check out Millerton’s village-wide Fall for Art Festival

Other Local Galleries

The White Gallery presents Modern Contemporary Masters and the best of up-and-coming artists in a welcoming, professional environment. The White Gallery offers an exciting mix of paintings, sculpture, and photography. Not to be missed is their annual Blue & Gold @ The White exhibit, which shines the light on artists from Housatonic Valley Regional High School. This is but one of their many community fundraisers held throughout the year. For more information, visit www.thewhitegalleryart.com.

Argazzi Art, in walking distance from The White Gallery, and housed in the original 1800’s building of The Lakeville Journal, showcases works of emerging and established artists within four natural-light-filled rooms, creating an intimate and engaging space. The gallery also hosts lectures, readings, and concerts. For more information, visit www.argaziart.com.

The Tremaine Art Gallery at The Hotchkiss School is a museum-quality exhibition space that hosts six shows each year. Featured artists engage in activities from guest-teaching to gallery talks. Shows are free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.hotchkiss.org/arts/tremaine-art-gallery.
