Film Showings: Denis the Pirate

Denis the Pirate, artist Sam Messer’s 11-minute animated art film, will be shown Friday, Saturday and Sunday in the main conference room at the Norfolk Hub starting every half hour. The film consists of a narration and music accompanying 1,700 etchings that illustrate a pirate story written for Messer’s daughter, Josephine, by her godfather, Denis Johnson. It took eight years to complete.

Magnificent Microscopes

Norfolk has a rich scientific and medical tradition that continues today. With help from the Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at Columbia University and the Norfolk Historical Society, Rich Kessin will use microscopes from various periods to show slides of human tissues like those that medical students and pathologists study. He will also demonstrate the use of smartphone microscopes (available at the library circulation desk) that can magnify anything at least 50 times and be used to take photos.
