Riverton, Connecticut

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERANestled along the Farmington River, the town of Barkhamsted, and the village of Riverton within has something to offer everyone. History, nature and outdoor activities abound. Riverton appears today just as it must have 100 years ago with its colonial houses, general store, churches, inns, and trees lining the streets. The landmark factory, Hitchcock Chair Company Store, began manufacturing chairs here in 1826. By 1928, the elaborately stenciled chairs and cabinets made in Hitchcocksville, now called Riverton, became famous throughout America. Stroll through this little village by the river with its collection of shops, restaurants, and places to stay.

The Old Riverton Inn is just one of the many attractions Riverton has to offer. Originally an old stagecoach stop along the Hartford to Albany route, the Old Riverton Inn is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Overlooking the wild and scenic designated west branch of the Farmington River and less than a mile from Peoples State Forest, the area abounds with outdoor activities including excellent trout fishing, canoeing, hiking, cross-country skiing, biking, tubing, picnicking, and nature watching. Both the dining room and enclosed grindstone terrace are available for weddings, parties, special occasions and is served by our Hobby Horse Bar.
